Philosophy and Spirituality

So I had philosophy inflicted upon me yesterday.  My head hurt like crazy by the end of the class.  Here is a small dose.  Allah is unlike anything else.  Allah is not in need of anything.  Colors need entities to color in order to be color, i.e. color’s existence is contingent upon that which it colors.  Anything that which exists in time and and space requires a dimension and age.  Allah cannot exist in space and time because he cannot be in need of anything.  He also cannot be bound by space and time, both of which are creation.  There are still a couple of loose ends that have not sunk in yet.  At the end, I got out of it that Allah’s existence is unlike anything else.  I don’t have time to go into any more detail.

Anyway, the last 20 minuets, Sheik Muhammed, may Allah preserve him, began to talk about how tawba is the first step because you have to stop that which is bad before doing what is good, otherwise they mix.  We would not drink milk or honey that is mixed with filth.  The heart likewise.  There was so much more.  If only you had been there.

“Anything that which exists in time and and space requires a dimension and age. Allah cannot exist in space and time because he cannot be in need of anything”

    “Anything” / “Allaah”

You (or your teacher) are saying that Allaah is a thing comparable to other things. Or He is a thing comparable to created things. And that is making an analogy between Creator and creation, when there is unanimous agreement that no such analogy can be made!

For Allah said, “There is nothing like unto Him.” [42:11] He said, “Do not draw likenesses to Allah.” [16:74] And He said, “For Allah is the Highest Similitude [16:60].”

  5. “At the end, I got out of it that Allah’s existence is unlike anything else. ”

*slow toned clapping* Nice job on reading the whole post.

Ahh … So I guess Allaah can exist in time and space and not require an age/dimension. 😉

  7. What this is going at is a refutation of Tajsim and showing that Allah cannot have a physical form like we do. Now this is still relevent for refuting those who say Allah is literally in the sky (which would mean he would be bound by time and space and would be limited to the sky). Of course we know he is with us where-ever we may be from the Quran. Allah knows best the state of His existence.

Why would Allaah be bound by time and space and limited by the sky?

Allaah is not comparable to “things” or “matter”.

  9. It doesn’t make sense to me either. Whoever says “Allah is in the sky” and means it literally needs to renew their Islam.

Allah cannot exist in space and time. Otherwise he would be like us. Some would say He exists in space and time in a way that is unlike us. However, that is like saying He is like us in a way that is unlike us.
